001 / The studio

What Superlab is.

  1. 01We make our own products. Superlab does not take client work. Everything here is something we decided to build ourselves.
  2. 02We build in public. Prototypes, tests and wrong turns go in the journal, as they happen. Concepts are labelled as concepts.
  3. 03Students in India, built around school. We work evenings and weekends. The pace is steady rather than fast, and we say so.

002 / How we build

One loop, repeated.

  1. Sketch

    Write down the problem and draw the smallest thing that could help.

  2. Prototype

    Build the cheapest version that actually works, on a desk, by hand.

  3. Test with people

    Put it in front of people who did not make it, and watch.

  4. Decide

    Choose what deserves to be built next, and what to drop.

003 / Principles

Six rules we build by.

  1. 01Honest progress. We show real work, including the failures. We never fake momentum, numbers or finish.
  2. 02Useful before clever. Nothing gets built because it sounds impressive. A feature has to earn its place.
  3. 03Warmth and precision. A friendly character inside a rigorous, minimal system.
  4. 04Works without the internet. Core features should never depend on a connection. Anything online is optional.
  5. 05Privacy is a design requirement. Collect only what is needed. Make it easy to switch things off and to leave.
  6. 06Small experiments first. We test the cheap version before committing to the expensive one, and we do not buy parts without a plan.
